Energy and Forces

Senior infants/ 1st Class

We investigated light and shadow using torches, objects like pencils/bottles/erasers, and a background.  We tried to make our shadows bigger and small by moving the object closer to and further away from the light source.

Floating and Sinking in Senior Infants and First Class

In our class we investigated floating and sinking.  First we predicted what would float or sink.  Then we tested our predictions.

The metal paper clip and a small pom-pom were the most surprising items.  We had thought the paper clip would float but it sank.  Interestingly, the pom pom floated below the surface of the water.

In the next lesson, we used paper to build boats to hold a marble.  Some of the boats sank quickly and some lasted all day.  The best design held 14 marbles for several hours.
We learned that the shape of the boat was important to whether it floated or not.

A Visit From Eirgrid

On Tuesday 3rd March 6th  class had a visit from EirGrid Energy, where we learned about how engineering is part of our everyday lives. They explained that engineers design and create many of the things we use every day, such as electricity networks, buildings, machines, and technology. It helped us understand how important engineering is in solving problems and improving the world around us.

During the visit, we also took part in a fun hands-on activity. We were given the challenge of designing and building our own wind turbine. Working in teams, we had to think like engineers and figure out how to make our turbine blades spin using wind power. This activity showed us how renewable energy works and how engineers help create cleaner ways to produce electricity.

Overall, it was an interesting and interactive experience that helped us learn more about engineering and renewable energy.
